The Lucy Craft Laney Museum, located in Augusta, Georgia, directly across the Savannah River from historic downtown Savannah, is one of only three museums in the United States dedicated solely to the achievements of an African-American woman. It is located at 1116 Phillips St, Augusta, GA 30901. The other two are in Richmond, Virginia and Cleveland, Ohio. With so few museums attempting to address the rich and diverse history of African- Americans throughout the U.S., this may seem like a small museum with only 25 artifacts inside its airtight display cases. However, as a full-time resident of Augusta for over 30 years and as a descendant of William Ellison who was born on the Laney plantation in Georgia’s Spalding County before his family moved to Massachusetts where he became a minister, I have come to value the smallness and significance of this museum.
The journey to open a museum in honor of Lucy Craft Laney is well documented. Lucy was an educator and founder of the National Association of Colored Women (NACW) and Women’s Business League. She was also a founder of the National Federation of Afro-American Women, the Women’s Educational and Industrial Union and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Women. In 1910, she began to collect artifacts from earlier leaders of the African-American community. She worked with the Smithsonian Institution to have the artifacts she collected, including those from her own family, designated for preservation. She was determined to preserve the story of African-American women so that future generations would know the contributions of blacks to our country.
African-American Museum Corps, or AAMC, is an extension of this effort to preserve the legacy of African-Americans. Founded in 1984, AAMC is the only African-American-led museum in the United States. AAMC is governed by a board of directors, all African-American members, who are nominated by a committee that investigates the candidate’s credentials, including their education, professional accomplishments, character and commitment to the African-American community. AAMC is supported by corporate, foundation and individual donors. AAMC is unique in that it aims to collect, document, preserve and exhibit the rich and diverse legacy of African-Americans. The museum portrays the achievements of African-Americans from the time of slavery to the present. AAMC’s mission is to collect, preserve and celebrate the legacy of African-Americans. AAMC’s collection, which currently numbers over one hundred thousand artifacts, is growing. The museum is open to the public and to school groups on special tours and field trips. Currently, the organization is building a new museum and education center which is expected to be completed in the spring of 2018. The facility will feature a collection of one million artifacts, a full-time education center, a library and a museum store.
As the United States population becomes less white, the African-American Museum Corps is also having to adapt to the changing demographics. African-American Museum Corps is a unique model of leadership and management that provides a new model of governance for the Museum Corps movement. The previous generation of Museum Corps had been led exclusively by white men. AAMC’s leadership has seen the need to adapt to a changing demographic and has taken steps to become more inclusive. The African-American Museum Corps is a nonprofit institution that was founded to celebrate, preserve and protect the legacy of African-Americans. The AAMC is a model of sustainable, organic growth and is successfully and sustainably governed by a board of directors that is comprised of African-Americans. AAMC has expanded by building new museums and acquiring additional artifacts. AAMC has managed to maintain a balance between growth and sustainable financial health and is successfully serving the community.

The African-American Museum Corps is an organization that is making strides towards creating a better future for all Americans.
